My work primarily consists of functional, high-fired stoneware and porcelain.  I love making pots that are comfortable on a kitchen counter or dining room table.  All the glazes and surface decoration I used speak to the nature of clay as a malleable and plastic material – the energy put into the work is captured permanently during the firing process.

When I use handmade pots for my morning cup of coffee, my daughter’s breakfast, or our weekly baked lasagna, I can feel the warmth and spirit that potter has instilled into that work.  I hope all my pots can find a home and become someone’s regular “favorite” piece that is reached for again and again.

Kate Poland-Hetman earned a B.A. in Studio Art from St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN, and a M.A.Ed. in Art Education from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, MN.  She has taught at various community art centers, including the NJ Center for the Visual Arts, Summit, NJ, and the Northern Clay Center, Minneapolis, MN.  She is currently a visual arts teacher at Fort Lee High School, and makes pots at the studio at the Clay Art Center, Port Chester, NY.
